Our First NLS Dinner Experience

I have heard that it is popular belief that the dinner organized by law school is some form of "initiation" into a "cult".

Yes we wear black and walk in in a single file while wearing long faces. Yes we eat quietly and solemnly. Yes no one else is invited. But trust me, it is not an initiation 😁

According to the rules, every law school student must complete three dining terms before being called to bar. So if you pass your bar finals but you missed one dinner, you won't be called to bar until the next year when you have completed your dinning terms. Yes, it is serious stuff.

Bibi, Sike and Patsy. No Sike is not short, Bibi and Patsy are just tall.

A few days before the dinner, our lecturers explained how the dinner goes to us, how we should act, dining etiquette, etcetera.

We got to the hall on time, a female lecturer checked our dressing to make sure we were properly dressed and we were showed to our designated seats (my friends and I were not allowed to sit together *sob*).

The most important person(s) at the dinner are the members of the Body of Benchers that come to dine with the students. No member of the Body of Benchers means no valid law dinner. Yes, it is that serious.

When the lecturers and member(s) of the BOB came in and sat down, the dinner began. No prayer, no long talk.

It was a three course meal of bread, butter and goat meat peppersoup; jollof rice, chicken, moi-moi and stir fried vegetables; and a fruit bowl. The food wasn't terrible in my opinion, the chicken was pretty dry but the meal was decent. I couldn't take pictures of the meal because picture taking is not allowed during the dinner.

After about 40 minutes of quiet dinning, the member of BOB amongst us gave a brief post dinner speech about ethics and the law profession after which we clapped. That was the most exciting part of the dinner, the clapping.

After that, we rose as the lecturers and members of BOB left and that was it. Pretty boring, very straightforward.

Then it was time for selfies, lol.

I found everything quite fascinating but enjoyable.

I might do a follow up post about what to wear for the law dinner, dos and don'ts, etc. Please let me know in the comment section if you want to see a post like that.

I hope you enjoyed this post. See you in my next one, xoxo.

In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
