Why You Need to add Konjac to Your Skincare Routine || Benefits of Konjac

Personally, I think Asians are the skincare gods. That continent is so diverse and each unique culture has blessed the world with great natural skincare products and remedies from the Indians and their turmeric to the Japanese and their konjac. Wait, you didn’t know about Konjac? Let me gist you.

Konjac is a plant cultivated in parts of China, Japan and Indonesia. This plant is actually eaten in those parts of the world but recently, konjac has gained popularity as it is being transformed into sponges and infused into other cosmetics. The sponge is actually made from the konjac plant fibers, has a soft texture and helps wash away dirt and oil from the face and body. The sponge is sometimes infused with other materials like charcoal or clay for added benefits. The konjac sponge helps naturally cleanse, exfoliate and nourish the skin. Konjac has so many natural nutrients like vitamins A, B, C, D and E, proteins, lipids, fatty acids, copper, zinc, iron and magnesium.

I got Beauty Formulas Bamboo Charcoal Konjac Facial sponge. It claims to be made of 100% pure konjac powder with no chemicals and parabens added. The added activated charcoal helps to absorb oil and excess sebum while the sponge gently cleanses and exfoliates the skin with just water, yes boo, you don’t even need a facial cleanser with a konjac sponge. You can also add your favourite facial cleanser when using the sponge to boost performance. This sponge is suitable for delicate and sensitive skin. I think what I love the most is that the sponge is 100% bio-degradable because it is basically a plant.

How to use a konjac sponge: You are to soak it in warm water for a few minutes to soften it (it is hard when dry, never use when dry) and gently squeeze the sponge between the palms to remove excess water (basically, treat it like a beauty blender). Then carefully. work the sponge across the face and body in a circular motion. After use, rinse the sponge in clean cool water and hang to dry, away from sunlight but somewhere with airflow.

Make sure to disinfect your konjac sponge every two weeks by placing it in very hot (but not boiling) water for five minutes. Also, it is advised that a konjac sponge be replaced every 2 to 3 months or when it starts to disintegrate.

I have been using this sponge for a few days and already I know it is going to be a permanent part of my routine. The day I got this sponge, a period pimple appeared on my jaw and I concentrated the sponge there for a few seconds when I washed my face (with just water) and the pimple basically disappeared after two days. Also, this sponge has worked cleansing makeup off my face with just water (Disclaimer: I already used a microfiber towel to clean my face). It leaves my face feeling soft and supple after every wash.

I purchased this sponge for 999 naira at Shoprite in Silverbird Entertainment Centre Abuja but konjac sponges are available on Aliexpress for cheaper prices if you don’t mind the wait or www.Ajali.com.ng

I also got the Beauty Formulas hydrating Konjac moisturiser to try out. It claims to deliver the powerful hydrating benefits of natural konjac powder which sits on the skin’s surface and locks in moisture, attracting up to 200% times its volume to hydrate the skin leaving it supple. Some of its ingredients include aqua, glycerin, sunflower oil, sweet almond oil, olive oil and cocoa butter.

I have found this moisturiser to be quite good so far. It does not feel greasy, blurs my pores and leaves my face feeling hydrated. It also controls shine because my face has a demi-matte finish for several hours after using it. I may have found a jewel guys.

I purchased this for 899 naira at Shoprite in Silverbird Entertainment Centre Abuja.

I hope I have convinced you to incorporate Konjac into your skincare routine lol.

  1. I've heard about the Konjac rave but I haven't tried it out. I would have loved to try out the moisturizer because I'm currently out but it has cocoa butter and my skin doesn't agree with cocoa butter as it makes me way darker.

    Nice post Sike.

  2. Even though I don't have an exact skin care routine, I always find the concept of all-natural products appealing. And considering the fact that this product doesn't even make a dent in your pocket, I believe it's just the thing for me.
